Zhoushan National Pelagic Fishery Base Construction Headquarters

In April 2015, at the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Zhoushan National Pelagic Fishery Base was established as the first national pelagic fishery base of its kind in China. The core area of the Base(the west terminal) covers an area of 6.23 square kilometers, with a professional and modernized harbor for pelagic fishery, a pelagic fishery town, a logistic area for pelagic aqua products processing&cold chain and a pelagic ship building and repairing yard undergoing development in this space. A total of 10 billion Yuan is expected to be invested in the Base. At present, putting aside the construction of the Base itself, the Base is also projected to be a National Ocean Technology Advanced Demonstration Base, Zhoushan National Pelagic Aqua product Trading Centre, Pelagic Fishery Town in Dinghai District, a Modernized Agricultural Park in North Dinghai District according to other national and provincial initiatives.

The Base aims to increase its pelagic fishing fleet to 600 vessels, with pelagic production reaching 600,000 tonnes and a cleared import of pelagic fish products reaching 800,000 tonnes by 2020, to create a total output of 30 billion Yuan for pelagic fishery economy, with each of the three sectors—pelagic fishing and relevant services, pelagic aquatic products processing, and aquatic products trading—accounting for an industrial value of 10 billion Yuan. For now, Zhoushan has 37 pelagic fishing enterprises ; 623 pelagic fishing vessels , accounting for 90% of the total in Zhejiang Province and 20% of China. In 2019, pelagic fishery produced 28,286 billion Yuan for Zhoushan's economy, among which 10.146 billion Yuan are from pelagic fishing and relevant services, 8.01 bllion Yuan from aquatic products processing and 10.13 billion Yuan from aquatic products trading. The total amount of pelagic fishing has reached 358,300 tons, and the output of squid accounts for more than 60% of the total in China, which gave Zhoushan the fame as the No.1 Squid Fishing City in China and the Hometown of Squid in China.
